For All Of You With New Digital SLR Cameras – Tip#1 Protect Your Lens

The amount of time I see people with expensive (and not so expensive) D SLR cameras without lenscaps or filter lens scares me. Let me give you a tip. You have shelled out your hard earned money for your digital slr, and you go out with it swinging round your neck/shoulder. Someone bangs into it or you knock it into something and scratch the lens glass. What can you do? Nothing really, you have to throw that lens away.

For some reason, which I do find moderately amusing most of the people that don’t look after their cameras and I see them with no lenscap on just stuffed into their camera bags are using Canon ;-) Just saying.  Protect It Please!!

Buying A Cheap UV Filter Does The Trick

On average a new Digital SLR Lens probably costs anywhere from £150 up to thousands. For £10 – £15 you can buy a UV filter and screw it onto the lens. Hey presto sacrifical victim…you bang into something and scratch this filter and you just throw it away and get another one filter.

I got told this twenty years ago. I have never ever scratched a lens and had to get rid of it.

Dust and Lens Caps

Lets move on to dust and lens caps. The reason why you have a lenscap is to protect the lens from elements whilst in transit. This could be anything, dust, grease, moisture etc.

Anything on the lenses causes a less than perfect image. For those of us that use our cameras in the studio, shooting at very high resolution and low ISO dust is evil.

But, hair, dust, grease etc should never get near your lenses. Keep your lenscap on.

Also, because I work in a Studio mostly I just simply take the lenscap off and put it somewhere. If you are shooting outdoors or landscape or sports its easier to attach it to a string or elasticated element so you can take it off and put it back on. However, some of the ways of doing this are a bit daft so please think before buying these attachments.

On the left here you can see a lenscap with string attachment to the camera body. fine if you only own one lens. Stupid idea if you have multiple lenses with different diameters.

My personal preference when I was taking landscape photos was for one of these ones where its elasticated to fit round the lens and so can be removed completely if required. Also, if its windy you can kind of tuck the lenscap under the elasticated element.

Cleaning Cameras

Before i do a photoshoot I clean my cameras, go through the lenses and body removing dust etc. I find this therapeutic. Its especially calming to do before weddings. Having a routine for taking photos is important. Having a routine for preparing to take photos equally as important. Buy a cleaning kit for your camera, including dust blowers, wipes for lenses etc.

In Conclusion

So…apologies, you or someone else has spent money on your camera and here is me telling you to spend more. before I forget… EVERY lens needs a UV filter on it. (unless you are blessed with only shooting in the studio…but still..its a false economy not having them on).

Quick Note:

  • Buy a UV Filter for each of your lens.
  • Make sure each lens has a lenscap.
  • Buy a cleaning kit and use it.

2011 – It’s not over yet!

This year we launched MartialArtsPics! Its been an amazing year, met some really cool new friends, took some nice photos, had some stuff published and generally ending on a massive high really.  But it’s not over yet! I’ve got two more shoots before the year is up! So its actually not a bad break off for me. Time to catch up on the website which I haven’t updated much and get that ready for next year and also time to chill out and play with the family and take photos of them over xmas and new year.

Also, working on my Portfolio for Mike Holdsworth Photography www.mikeholdsworth.com and doing a Best Of 2011 Gallery for MartialArtsPics.

My editing has improved a lot this year but I think there is still some significant way I can go with it so going to also be loading up examples of my editing work too as I learnt new tricks and techniques.

Also testing scheduled publishing of posts to the site and syncing to twitter and facebook. This post is scheduled for publishing at 12:01 Friday December 23rd. Means I can pre-load the site with content if I am going to be out for a while and people get something interesting from me lol!

Have a good un!

RIP Fuji S2 Pro

My faithful friend over what appears to be 9 years and thousands of photos has finally been retired. I’m not entirely sure how I battled on for so long, and I seemed to be taking photos of people with better cameras than me more and more often. It has been an interesting journey with my trusty Fuji S2 Pro. I dont think they make them like that anymore as it really was built to last.

Flash, Camera, Action!

With a successful night shoot under my belt it was time to start looking at ways of improving the variety of lighting available to me outdoors.

Also one thing that was very noticeable is that when firing flash for an entire shoot those little bad boys eat the AA batteries.

With a full professional mobile studio to nick bits from I have White and silver umbrellas and somewhere I have a small softbox. From my research I think you would need at least 3 flashes tied together to fire off my larger softboxes.

Currently from just kit lying around I have 3 flashes, 3 stands, 3 umbrellas and cabling to fire and sync 2 of the flashes. I also have one wireless transmitter for firing flashes off remotely.

With the flashes there are 2 x Nikon Speedlight SB-24 and 1 x SB-22s. I had to start off with one Sb-24 but it started to fizz and not take the charge so i had to replace it.

As I have access to an electronics lab, I’ve set about fixing the dodgy flash with the assistance of one of our electronics guys. The issue was the battery cage so am going to take This opportunity to make a large battery for this flash. Should get around the issue of battery life.

Poncianinho Almeida Capoeira

Some personal shots I took after photographing Poncianinho for New Holland Publishing for a book on Capoeira technique. Poncianinho might be familiar to Harry Potter fans from his appearance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire or the BBC Idents featuring Capoeira on a rooftop.
